Privacy Policy

Who I am

This website is a personal blog by me, Jonas Fathy. I am based in Southeast London, and if you need to get in touch, please email me via the contact form on this website.

This Privacy Policy outlines my practices with respect to information collected from those who access our website at  https://fathy.de (the “Site“) or otherwise share personal information with me (collectively called “Users“). The responsible authority within the area of data protection laws, in particular the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is the Information Commissioner’s Office in the UK.

What personal data we collect and why we collect it

The Site will only collect data where it’s relevant to function safely (for example when administering comments) or where it’s necessary in order to improve it (for example by analysing visitor movement and interest).

Comments and contact form

When visitors leave comments on the site or contact me via the contact form, the Site will collect the data shown in the comments form, and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection.

An anonymised string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. The Gravatar service Privacy Policy is available here: https://automattic.com/privacy/. After approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.

Furthermore, your comment will be sent to the Akismet spam protection service to protect the website from malicious actors. Akismet’s privacy policy can also be found here, as it’s run by the same provider: https://akismet.com/privacy/

Media

If you upload images to the website, avoid uploading images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS) included. Visitors to the website can download and extract any location data from images on the website, which could compromise your privacy.

Cookies and analytics

As is standard practice, this website uses a variety of cookies to facilitate the running of the website and a positive user experience. I am committed to do so in the most transparent way; please see the cookie policy for more details, including a list of all cookies, their purposes, and how to manage your consent individually.

Embedded content from other websites

Articles on this site may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if the visitor has visited the other website. For example, if a YouTube video is embedded, YouTube will gather the same information as if you were browsing on it.

These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracking your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website.

If you would like to avoid that, empty your cookies or surf in your browser’s incognito mode.

Who we share your data with

I will not, under any circumstances, sell your data. Where you have given explicit permission, some personal information may be shared. For example, if you request a password reset, your IP address will be included in the reset email, or visitor comments may be checked through an automated spam detection service.

How long your data will be retained

If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so I can recognise and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.

For users that register on the Site (if any), it also stores the personal information they provide in their user profile. All users can see, edit, or delete their personal information at any time (except they cannot change their username). Website administrators can also see and edit that information.

What rights you have over your data

If you have an account on this site, or have left comments, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data I hold about you, including any data you have provided to me. You can also request that I erase any personal data I hold about you. This does not include any data I am obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.
